Sixteen 03:46
Sixteen My feelings abate As I turn to my own face Mirrored just like we were On that quiet afternoon Music to my ears and to their hands There are some things you will never understand And everyone has shiny eyes Maybe that's why I can't sleep at night I was five when I learnt What it meant to be alive Help me feel like I love Stop destroying your health If I tear it all away will you lose yourself? And listen to my words Rather than my face And let my voice sink in For a couple of days Do not let yourself Find a way to retrace Listen to my words Rather than my face It does not seem so distasteful After all the things I have done It is desire And you say it all wrong Five, Ten, and Sixteen Sixteen Time is so hurtful to me And listen to my words Rather than my face And let my voice sink in For a couple of days Do not let yourself Find a way to retrace Listen to my words Rather than my face And listen to my words Rather than my face And let my voice sink in For a couple of days Do not let yourself Find a way to retrace Listen to my words Rather than my face

I Thought That You Wouldn't Be There Please don't define me You know life's a little blurry We both know that you like dark ambiguity Had a dream You hated me We both know that's obscene But haven't seen you in weeks That's alright I won't sleep tonight Now that life's over A weight off my shoulder Please don't be central You sometimes have potential We both know I can be so cruel Met you Somewhere Had to show me you care Sat in the shower and watched it fall That's alright I won't cry tonight The weight off my shoulder Replaced by another That's alright I won't sleep tonight Now that's life's over A weight off my shoulder That's alright I won't sleep tonight Now that's life's over A weight off my shoulder That's alright I won't sleep tonight The weight off my shoulder Replaced by another

Distortion of Importance The 2 o'clock sun casts shadows On the walls of this hell Smoke around my form Like love, like love, like love And what am I doing with my life You told me a thousand times that you trust me You trust me And I should do what I love But that's not enough It's lovely It's ugly Salt air brought me here To picture the stars at ten So alone in a curtain crack What's it like to be dead Illuminated panels of my bed Rocking me into a sleep of unease There's an echo of the past Of the breeze and the sleep And the sleep And what am I doing with my life You told me a thousand times that you trust me You trust me And I should do what I love But that's not enough It's lovely It's ugly And I don't know if I'll be here again tomorrow You're a pathway You're a Sunday And everyone should love But that's not enough It's lovely It's ugly All we know is creation We know nothing about nothingness All we know is creation We know nothing about nothingness And I'm a distortion of importance And I'm a distortion of importance

Red 03:45
Red Back At the old place My weary eyes met the landscape And upon The darkening grass Four red points made a spark A young mind Has met the outside In the gloom across the room was the blue light And that Was the first time That passion filled eyes met mine And I want to go back to those days Because now my own mind is a mere archway And I search for your eyes in the darkness But all I can feel is a heartbeat And I want to go back to those days Because now my own mind is a mere pathway And I search for your eyes in the darkness On the orange ice field where hearts hurt And back At the old place Two dark figures formed my face And memories Swam under the sun As I lay in the breeze of being young And the only orange back then was brick Looking out from a wall to us a cliff And I've seen so many other eyes shine But seen so many more Devoid of life And I want to go back to those days Because now my own mind is a mere archway And I search for your eyes in the darkness But all I can feel is a heartbeat And I want to go back to those days Because now my own mind is a mere pathway And I search for your eyes in the darkness On the orange ice field where hearts hurt And back At the old place My weary eyes met the landscape And that Was the first time That life filled eyes met mine

It Doesn't Slow Down We're getting colder now I'm getting older now The garden's overgrown again I was so much younger then A year 'til childhood's done A year 'til we're all gone It's like me to be melodramatic But I can't quite wrap my head around it We're getting colder now I'm getting older now The garden's overgrown again We were so much younger then

about

'The Night Dances' is the debut five track EP from Aphra Taylor. Aphra Taylor is a seventeen-year-old Musician from Oxford.

The Night Dances is named after a poem of the same name by Sylvia Plath from the anthology 'Ariel'. The poem is about Plath's son and how he would dance in his crib at night - this image resonated with Aphra as it explores motherly love, mental health, and nocturnal inspiration.

The EP was home recorded over a seven month period on a ten year old Macbook whose screen died and was replaced by a TV mid recording...

The songs on the EP are:

Sixteen – About a year in someone's life and the associated disruptions to that – each verse represents one significant person in that year. It's about the passing of time and growing older.

I Thought That You Wouldn't Be There - Is about being let down by someone that you love, through contradictory messaging and the betrayal of trust; but also the literal sense of someone not showing up.

Distortion of Importance – Is about feeling insignificant in an over-populated world. Touching on existentialism and what follows life, through death.

Red – Represents childhood memories that contrast with new surroundings, and the pain you feel when you realise life's truths.

It Doesn't Slow Down – Explores the fear of pending responsibility, and the stress of becoming an adult.
