about

This song is about one sided relationships and the suffocating impact of someone being dependent on you. It’s about having to deal with another person's manipulative tendencies and quite literally the self pitying ‘way they live their life’.

“This song is like a sister to ‘Insomnia’, they are relatively about the same situation and how lockdown made it seem so much bigger and all consuming. I went on lots of walks which brought back a lot of memories, good and bad. I feel like the whole song is about moving on with my life and is a form of communication to my younger self and the people I had connections with”.

Lyrics like ‘your eloquence just makes things so much worse’ and ‘you’re the only words left on my tongue’ convey the difficulties of leaving an unhealthy situation when you are also met with
the great parts of a person you loved. There are still positive points within the song despite it being about being hurt by another person at its core.

“I really hated the idea of songs being released about covid and the lockdowns and I despised the thought of writing one myself. I wanted more than anything to escape the situation through art and music. I still think that despite this, I subconsciously captured the feelings of isolation and entrapment associated with the lockdowns in both ‘The Way You Live Your Life’ and ‘Insomnia’ so there are tiny parts of this period of time woven within them.

This song is the first of three new songs to be released in the lead up to my appearance at Truck Festival 2022 (I play the Veteran's and Virgins stage at 1:30pm on the Friday).

I have attended every Truck Festival since I was born, I was so excited when I heard that I had been selected to play by BBC Introducing and it's even more special that it's Truck's 25th anniversary this year! It seemed a perfect opportunity to release the new songs.

lyrics

LYRICS:

Trainspotting,
Insistence,
Breathe in the cold air.
I go back to where you live,
And see us everywhere.
Cold stones in the meadow,
Apple cider thoughts.
Lakeside visitor,
This all just got too much.

And I hate your pretty thoughts,
Sometimes I wish you didn’t think at all.
And I hate your pretty words,
Your eloquence just makes things so much worse.

I was fourteen,
Him sixteen,
Stayed close coz we were sad.
Now I see that those feelings are all he ever had.
These days do you decay with pride,
Or tell them I was unfair?
My limbs became wings today,
My lying, fickle friend.

And I hate your inner thoughts,
Sometimes I wish you didn’t think at all.
And I hate your empty words,
Your reticence just makes things so much worse.

And we (we, we,we…),
Will stagnate (nate, nate, nate…).
Things (things, things things…),
Will never be the same (same, same, same…).
And I hate (hate, hate, hate…),
The way you live your life,
We all get sad sometimes.

And I burnt (burnt, burnt, burnt…),
Your love for me (me, me, me…),
Or at least a portrait (trait, trait, trait..)
But you’re the only,
Words left on my tongue.
Don’t know what’s going on.

And I hate,
What you think of me.
Sometimes I wish that I could cease to be.
And I hate all these words,
Your negligence just makes things so much worse.

A summer spent without you,
My heart upon the glass.
Streets bright,
Candlelit.
Walk back into the dark.
